It’s a common sight on Canadian roads in winter: drivers losing control of their cars, sliding off the road or colliding with one another.

It’s a common sight on Canadian roads in winter: drivers losing control of their cars, sliding off the road or colliding with one another. Immediately after the bone-jarring crunch that can result from such an incident, many people think they’re fine, but may have suffered a whiplash injury.

Whiplash occurs when the force of impact thrusts the head back and forth. Frequently the damage this can cause is not immediately obvious. For many people, it is not until the next morning that they wake to feel the pain and stiffness resulting from muscles and ligaments injured by whiplash.

Things can get worse! That stiff neck and mild to moderate pain may soon develop into serious pain, moving up to the head or down into the shoulders. In severe cases, the injury might require a visit to the emergency room or family doctor.

In the past, neck braces were the treatment of choice for this type of neck injury, but research has shown them to be ineffective. Short term rest may be appropriate, but the most successful approach is early movement and gentle exercise, combined with manual treatment – for which patients are likely to be referred to a Physiotherapist. (Note: a doctor’s referral is not required to see a Physiotherapist)

What does a Physiotherapist do to help?

After a thorough physical assessment of a patients condition, a Physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan designed specifically to reduce pain, help the body repair itself, and get the patient back to a normal level of activity as soon as possible. Treatment can include hot or cold packs, ultrasound, acupuncture, manual therapy (which includes massage, stretching, mobilization or manipulation of joints and soft-tissues), and most importantly – education regarding appropriate daily activities, and a program of specific gentle exercises for the patient to do in the clinic’s gym or at home.

People respond differently to both injury and treatment, but by monitoring progress throughout the course of treatment, a physiotherapist can help patients return to their pre-injury function at a pace that works best for them.

Strong research has also shown that starting physiotherapy treatment in the first 96 hours after sustaining an injury, will greatly improve the recovery process and prevent ongoing pain, so if you or someone you care about has sustained a whiplash neck injury, don’t delay!

Call today to book an appointment with a registered Physiotherapist. That way the road to recovery from whiplash isn’t as painful to follow as a road covered in snow and ice during a Canadian winter.

There is no denying that these are difficult economic times – and that many people have to budget and cut corners wherever possible.

There is no denying that these are difficult economic times – and that many people have to budget and cut corners wherever possible. Whatever you do, don’t cut corners where your health is concerned! The economy will improve, and the last thing you need to do is make short term healthcare decisions with long-term consequences!

Unless you’ve had health challenges, it’s easy to take good health for granted. Many of us also forget just how important good health is to our quality of life, and to our ability to cope with life’s challenges…..and in an economy like this one, you really need good health!

This best way to improve and protect your health is to take personal responsibility for it. That means taking advantage of what we know about health and healthcare. Eat healthy, hydrate, exercise, sleep, and reduce stress in your life.

These preventative measures will help, but life still happens. Illness, injury and degenerative conditions are also facts of life, but get the help you need. See your doctor and dentist when you should! If you find yourself in pain – lower back, shoulder, neck, knee or whatever – see a physiotherapist. Not every clinic has a long waiting list, so find one that will get you in quickly!

Why is quickly important? Did you ever wonder why professional athletes receive immediate physiotherapy and rehabilitation following injuries? Team doctors have seen the studies, and know that patients get faster, more complete recovery when they get treatment immediately. You may not be a professional athlete, but you’ve got a life – and need to return to function as rapidly and completely as possible!

While Canadians are fortunate to have public health coverage, and many workers have extended health plans, you may not have coverage for physiotherapy or other care. Even though times are tough, don’t avoid or delay getting the help you need. That ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure – and will impact your quality of life now, and long after this bad economy is nothing but a memory. Only you can decide what that’s worth!

With the arrival of 2011, many of us will make a “get into better shape” New Year’s resolution. Most of us, will then use exercise to attain our fitness and weight loss goals. While exercise can have a very positive impact on our lives, there are risks, and you really can get too much of a good thing.

Overtraining syndrome is a condition consisting of various symptoms that occur as a result of exercise without appropriate recovery. Excessive fatigue is the primary symptom, but you may also see decreases in physical performance, mood alterations, and frequent illness/injury. These symptoms can last for months if signs of overtraining are not identified early. Some early signs and symptoms that can indicate overtraining are:

• Decreased quality of sleep • Increased fatigue • Increased stress
• Persistent muscle soreness • Being easily agitated • Decreased performance

If you noticing these signs, you may be overtraining, and need to make adjustments. But what should you change?

While you may need to decrease the duration and/or the intensity of your exercise program, in many cases the exercise itself is not the problem. You need to remember, that what you do in your recovery period (i.e. the time between exercise sessions), is as important as anything you do while exercising. The main components of quality recovery are:

• Proper post workout routine: proper cool-down period post exercise – with stretching of the muscle groups that were used in your exercise session
• Adequate hydration: Drink plenty of water both while exercising, and between exercise sessions
• Good diet: Healthy, well balanced meals
• Quality sleep: appropriate sleep length (7-8 hours) that leaves you feeling refreshed

By moderating duration and intensity (if required) – and integrating quality recovery into your exercise routine, you can avoid the development of overtraining symptoms.

It is important to realize that the benefits of exercise greatly outweigh the risks. By maintaining a reasonable balance between exercise and recovery, you are more likely to avoid the risks. That will get you the benefits you are looking for, and as they say… “add years to your life, and life to your years”.
